Why Do Cats Meow?

Frequent nighttime or early morning meowing is a fairly common complaint among cat owners.  Meows can express and evoke a sense of urgency for food or attention. Cats are crepuscular creatures. This means their nature is to hunt at dusk and dawn.  They awaken naturally at dawn and they want company.meowing cat

 Five Common Reasons Cats Meow:

  • Feeling lonely or bored
  • Seeking attention
  • Asking to go outside or come inside
  • Seeking food
  • Wanting to mate

Don’t ignore your meowing cat without first checking whether something is amiss in his or her life. Is the water bowl empty? Is your cat trapped in a room or closet?

Excessive meowing can be a sign of a physical problem – illness, pain, hunger, thirst, or confusion.  It can also be a symptom of hyperthyroidism, particularly when accompanied by weight loss and hyperactivity.

Always make sure your cat’s basic physical needs are being met before assuming that he or she is demanding attention. A quick call or trip to your veterinarian is a good idea if the meowing is more than usual.
